The Golden Buddha is in fact, a statue made of pure gold. We
were told that it was originally located in a town outside of Bangkok and during one of
the invasions by Burma in the early part of the last century, the Buddha was covered in
plaster to prevent its value from being discovered. Over time it appears that
everyone forgot that it was pure gold under the plaster. During restoration work the
statue was moved and part of the plaster was damaged and fell off. When its value
was discovered it was moved to a temple in Bangkok and is visited by hundreds of thousands
of people every year. |
| One of the charming things about travelling the canals is the
multitude of small boats which are used by the residents as general transport and
also to transport produce and other goods to markets. |

This particular temple is one of those built in honour of the King
of Thailand who was made famous in the world outside Thailand by the movie "The King
and I". |
| Every market in Bangkok sells an enormous amount of fresh produce
to the locals. We discovered some very luscious fruits as well as some previously
unknown to us, vegetables. Everywhere there is the delicious aroma of Thai cooking
and its possible to buy a very tasty meal for as little as $2 or $3 dollars (Australian). |
